Despite spending most of his high school years doodling frock designs in notebooks, Alex Perry almost became a teacher. Thankfully, in 1981 he committed himself to his real passion and studied Fashion Design at East Sydney Technical College.
After graduating in 1984, Alex’s first position working within the fashion industry was as a deportment instructor at the June Dally Watkins Model Academy. He moved on to Ursula Hufnagl Model Management where he honed his skills as a model booker, and was poached soon after by Chadwick Model Management.
As head model booker at Chadwick’s, Alex represented an elite stable of models including Jerry Hall, Kate Fischer, Tonya Bird and Annalise Seubert, brokering deals for high-profile fashion shoots and commercials, and scouting for new talent internationally.
As a sideline Alex was often called upon to create evening gowns for many of his models attending glamorous events. After seven years he decided it was time to launch his own fashion label and Alexander Perry Haute Couture was opened in 1992.
In 1995, Alex showed at the very first Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, and has been the only eveningwear designer invited to show each year since.
Over the past eleven years the Alex Perry fashion shows evolved into what has been described as “the most glamorous show of the week”. Perry’s runway shows have featured supermodels such as Linda Evangelista, Megan Gale, Kate Fisher, Alyssa Sutherland, Nicole Trunfio and most recently Lily Cole.
After being established as Australia’s premier Couturier, Alex Perry launched his first “ready to wear” collection in 1998. The collection of special occasion pieces has been designed with dinner, cocktails, the races and red carpet moments in mind.
Alex’s great sense of humour, quick wit and candid responses, is “made for television”, and he has developed into an accomplished media personality. His public speaking talents are highly sought, and he is frequently in demand for guest reportage, appearances, interviews and commentary.
Alex is the only judge to appear in all six series of AUSTRALIA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.
