The Inside Scoop Of The Flash Season 5: Danielle Panabaker (Killer Frost)
The Flash Season 5 starts Wednesday 8:30pm October 10
From talks about Killer Frost, meta-schizophrenia and directing her own episode – we speak to actress Danielle Panabaker about her role in the upcoming season of The Flash…
How does Caitlin’s story intersect with Killer Frost in season five?
They are certainly going to be intertwined. At the start of the season, I think we are going to see Caitlin trying to get more information about Killer Frost and how she came to be. Caitlin wants to understand that a little bit more, which is exciting. I think that will help us understand her motivations.
That was a huge reveal about Caitlin and Killer Frost in season four….
You’re right. It was huge! It was epic.
What can fans expect from Killer Frost in season five?
Who knows with Killer Frost? I honestly don’t know what will happen. I don’t know where she went. I don’t know if somebody took her. I don’t know if she decided not to come back. Hopefully, we’ll learn that as well.
Is there going to be more development between Caitlin and her mother this season? Perhaps her mother has some answers about Killer Frost?
Hmmm… What can I say about this? Well, we’ve had this big reveal about Killer Frost being a part of Caitlin since she was a child. When you have questions about your childhood, aren’t your parents the first place you go?
Does this mean we’ll finally get the origin story of Killer Frost?
I hope we’re finally going to get the origin story. That was part of my frustration with last year, because I didn’t feel like we asked enough why questions.
We didn’t understand her motivation. It’s going to be Caitlin’s mission to understand how Killer Frost came to be. It was a revelation to know that it wasn’t from the particle accelerator explosion. That was a big curveball.
Is meta-schizophrenia going to be a big part of the show in season five?
I don’t know about meta-schizophrenia. It was always described to me as a bit like a hole – but I would still like to understand why they call her Killer Frost. From everything I’ve seen, she hasn’t been particularly ‘killer’ yet.
As an actress, what’s it been like to explore these new aspects of the character?
It’s been totally fun. I feel like one of the benefits of being in a superhero show is the fact that you get to play with the extremes.
Will Caitlin tackle this mission to find out about Killer Frost alone or will she ask any of Team Flash to help?
I think she learned her lesson from trying to go off on her own. She tried to fix things herself in the past. That happened in season three. I think she will be going to the rest of Team Flash for help and support with this.
Who would you like to spend more one-on-one time with this season?
Personally, I’m really excited to have more time with Carlos [Valdes, who plays Cisco] in season five. He’s an incredible actor and a dear friend.
I think you’re going to see a little bit more of them together, which is awesome. But, to be honest, I love working with everybody. Tom Cavanagh is spectacular, and I feel like there’s so much more our characters can do together.
Obviously, all the new characters are going to be exciting to watch, too. I’m getting to know them and spend some more quality time with all of them, which is exciting.
What excites you the most about season five?
I’m excited to have more to do. I feel like we started on a path where there was lots of stuff to explore. I hope we keep going up that path. I hope we keep learning about Caitlin and about Killer Frost, and seeing if there’s a world in which they can both exist.
How does Caitlin react to the arrival of Nora [played by Jessica Parker Kennedy] this season? Will the arrival of Barry and Iris’ [played by Candice Patton] daughter disrupt what’s happening to Caitlin?
I don’t think that Caitlin necessarily looks at Nora as disruptive. I think she’s excited to see her. She’s a little bit skeptical at first – but the team leader leads the charge in wanting to keep her around and she trusts the leader.
In season four, Caitlin was thrown into much more action. In season five, will we continue to see more of the character outside the lab?
I hope so. Personally, I really like seeing her out of STAR Labs – but that’s a totally selfish thing. I like it when she gets out and she gets her boots on the ground. I like it when she gets to explore things herself, rather than just being passive and waiting for things to happen to her.
Plus, there’s less medical jargon when you’re out of the lab…
For sure! I’m really ready for Tom [Cavanagh] to come back, so he can take some of the heavy lifting off me.
Which aspect of the role of Caitlin do you enjoy playing the most?
I love the action. Absolutely. Caitlin is a scientist and a doctor – and I think we’ll get to see that continue to be an integral part of Team Flash. However, I do like seeing her out there a little bit more. I love seeing her fighting the bad guys.
How have the fans reacted to the Caitlin and Killer Frost storyline?
It’s been crazy. The fans are great. To be honest, I have never seen anything like it. I was fairly new to social media when I joined the show, so it’s definitely been an experience. I love it.
You’re going to be directing an episode this season. Congratulations. How do you feel about your upcoming directorial duties?
Thank you. I’m really excited. I mean, I couldn’t do it without the support of my Flash family; in particular Tom Cavanagh and [executive producer] Todd Helbing. It wouldn’t be possible without them.
Which episode are you going to be directing?
It looks like I’m going to direct episode 18, which is one of the later episodes. It’s a good one. I can’t wait.
